Assessments: Getting Cooperation From Family.

Updated: Jan 7

Caregivers are the heroes with those who may have Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other issues. When it is time to get the assessment for a diagnosis, there may not always be complete cooperation. When this is the case, some people come to the conclusion that expectations need to be revised. Continuing with patience and doing what it takes to develop cooperation is essential.

Here are a few things that you can do to get your loved one, whom you know may need the assessment, to agree.

  • Don’t take ‘no’ personally.

  • Compromise.

  • Do your research, become knowledgeable.

  • Include your loved one in the decision process.

  • Be patient

  • Offer options

Continuing with sensitivity to the fact that a loss of control is very difficult for older adults sometimes is judicious. It is hard for a person to lose ability and the individual can become frustrated and experience feelings of lack or insufficiency. You may know the person better than anyone, and will be the trusted source for any recommendations or advice. Being sure to include the person in the decision making process is crucial, and you only want the best for them. Support services and access to unrestrictive environments can be a relief.
