How Does a Changing Social Climate Affect Mental Health?

Updated: Oct 17, 2024

How much does our ever-shifting social climate affect mental health? When and how does the environment influence us? And, given that we can't always control these changes, what can be done? Who or what should we hold accountable, if anything? Is placing blame even useful?

Human culture has undergone massive transformations in recent years, driven by factors like smartphones, social media, increased autonomy, and expanding opportunities. These changes often stem from both external and internal forces acting on individuals.

Take media, for example. Since the 1970s, television has gradually shifted away from depicting group dynamics, focusing instead on individual fame and personal achievement. Meanwhile, certain regions have seen a decline in values related to relationships, obedience, and consistency. But is this shift positive or negative? It’s hard to say—it could be either. What’s undeniable is that these shifts are influencing mental health, often creating challenges that previous generations may not have faced or perhaps approached differently. Hesitancy to seek help, for example, may look different now compared to years past.

As society evolves, so do the ways we innovate and learn. And with a changing culture come new experiences that often require adaptation, both mentally and emotionally. These shifts may lead to emotional changes and challenges that we need to be prepared for.

How have you noticed these changes in your own life? And what about the perception of mental health services—has your view evolved over time?

Mental health struggles are often complex and may require the expertise of trained professionals. It's important to remember that relief is possible, and reaching out for help should never be something to shy away from.
